The Tucson Hospitals Medical
Education Program (THMEP) was established in 1963 to conduct graduate and
continuing medical education programs at Tucson Medical
Center and throughout the greater Tucson
community. As a cooperative venture between physicians, hospital
administrators and board members, the THMEP programs have enjoyed active
support by the Tucson medical community for over 35 years. Since 1971, THMEP has been affiliated with
the University of Arizona (U of A) School of Medicine and the U of A has since
become an integral partner in our graduate medical education activities.
THMEP’s formation was
based on two firmly held beliefs. First, that quality medical education is best
attained under the guidance of outstanding clinicians in an environment of
clinical excellence. Second, that the highest quality of medical care is
attained through an association with a strong educational program. As such, the
goal of THMEP has remained unchanged since its inception -- to constantly
improve both medical education and patient care through a strong commitment to
both.
|
|
As a resident in a THMEP program, your responsibility is to acquire the knowledge and develop the skills that will provide the very best in appropriate, compassionate care for your patients. Our responsibility is to provide the environment in which this is possible and to encourage and assist your professional growth and education in any way we can. |

The Transitional program is under the supervision of the Transitional Year Program Director, Dr. Tyler J. Kent, and is aided by full-time, part-time and voluntary teaching staff. Most are board certified in their specialty, and hold faculty appointments at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. The University of Arizona-Tucson Hospitals Internal Medicine Residency Program (UA-THIMRP) is a cooperative effort between Tucson Medical Center (TMC), University of Arizona (U of A) and the Southern Arizona VA Medical Center (SAVAMC). |
|
The UA-THIMRP offers a
three-year Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program for twenty-one
residents per year, with first-year positions for an additional six or seven
Preliminary residents. A Surgery
residency is conducted in conjunction with the University of Arizona for
thirty-three residents.
As a major teaching
facility for the University of Arizona Pediatrics Residency, THMEP also
administers a busy inpatient Pediatric service, including both General and ICU
Medicine. Finally, THMEP supports regular and elective rotations at TMC
for residents belonging to several other University of Arizona programs. These
affiliated programs include Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Urology,
Emergency Medicine, Neurology and Infectious Diseases.
Tucson Hospitals
Medical Education Program is also institutionally approved for continuing
medical education, conducting some 40 CME conferences each month, as well as
other courses and seminars for both residents and practicing physicians in
Tucson and its surrounding communities. THMEP is the largest sponsor of CME
accredited by the Arizona Medical Association, approving over 4,500 physician
hours of Category 1 CME yearly.
